Sorry for the delay with this week’s This Geek’s Week. As that commercial says, “Life comes at you fast” ...
PERSONAL STUFF
Firstly, let me say that I decided to take a personal day and watch three movies on Friday, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD and BRAVE. On Saturday, I went back and saw BRAVE again, this time in 3D. Although I am not a movie reviewer, let me just give you my humble opinions on all three of these entertaining but very different movies. AL:VH was nothing less than I would expect from Timur Bekmambetov. Visually artistic and as stylistic as anything else he has done (check out NIGHT WATCH & DAY WATCH) this was a spectacle from start to finish. My friends tell me that it was nothing like the book, but as I never read it, I didn’t care and really enjoyed it. Of course, even though I am a Brit, I suspect it may not be historically accurate. SAFFTEOTW was thought-provoking and the perfect vehicle for Steve Carell (God, how much THE OFFICE misses him), he even managed to make Keira Knightley bearable. Again, a very enjoyable movie that left you with the question: Which one of the characters in the movie would you be if you had 3 weeks left before the world ended? Finally, BRAVE … breathtaking, entertaining, spectacular, I could go on and on … possibly my favorite Disney movie so far. I recommend that you add all three to your movie list and let me know what you thought.
I also picked up LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW and LEGO BATMAN 2 and as anyone who knows me can attest to my love all things chainsaw, it speaks volumes when I say that Batman was my favorite.
MOVIES
This week not very many trailers were released that really piqued my interest. We covered DREDD earlier in the week … but here is the best of the rest.
TAKEN 2
Shooting started on MALEFICENT and we got our first look at Angelina Jolie in the title role and she looked amazing.
Pop Sugar produced this video with some other information.
In the absence of any earth shattering movie news, here are two trailers that have been around for a while, but caught my attention again on the big screen.
DESPICABLE ME 2
THE HOBBIT
PROMETHEUS continues to split moviegoer opinion, but at least one of the mysteries was revealed this week when the words that David spoke to the Engineer were revealed.

da hmanâm aî kya namrrtuh zdêêtaha. gwhivah-pyorn-îttham sas daatrr kredah.
That literally means:
this man (is) here because not-die he-desires. life_increase_wish to-him you-(can)-give he-believes.
And if you were to say it down the pub, it would go something like this:
This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life.
This is one of these times when I really question the decisions not to add subtitles … it obviously meant enough to be included, so wouldn’t it makes sense to be able to understand it?
Michael Bay also seemed to indicate that TRANSFORMERS 4 would have a completely new cast. I have no idea if this is a bargaining tool, or whether the movie will feature no human characters at all … (insert Megan Fox joke here).
TELEVISION

The Disney Channel, home to the Marvel Universe, is carrying on where it left off in 2011. Having ended Nickleodeon’s 16 years as the #1 kid’s channel, it is currently outperforming it’s rival by 23%. The latest news is that based on from the success of their ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN series and the AVENGERS movie, they are currently developing three more animated series: AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, HULK and a brand new IRON MAN adventure.
The rest of the TV schedule is pretty dire at the moment, but I have high hopes for a few shows that begin airing this week. THE GREAT ESCAPE on TNT: Each week, teams have to escape from famous locations starting with Alcatraz. BRAND X WITH RUSSELL BRAND on FX is a six episode late night talk show which I hope leads to something bigger or permanent.
And ::drumroll:: ANGER MANAGEMENT on FX with Charlie Sheen. Love him or hate him, he is always interesting to watch and if the trailers are anything to go by, he will be winning.
As you know, here at GeekWeek we are huge fans of the British TV show THE INBETWEENERS, so we will be interested to see how MTV’s take on the show will compare when it debuts on Monday, August 20th at 10:30pm.
SDCC 2012
We got our first look at one of the trolleys that will be trundling around the event.
The exclusives are starting to take shape and the latest list can be found here at Awesome Toy Blog. So far I am pretty underwhelmed apart from these:
Bane USB Flash Drive
Polly Pockets DC Villains ... it's hard to find cool stuff to create Geekettes from an early age

Dana as Zuul from Ghostbusters
SPORT
The Heat won the NBA Championship (YAWN) and in the most lackluster major soccer/football event I can remember the semifinals will be contested between Germany vs Italy and Spain vs Portugal. Hopefully, it will now live up to the pre-billing as these have certainly been the four best teams to date.

The biggest news that may not have made national headlines is that the WBO investigation into the Pacquiao/Bradley debacle concluded that a miscarriage of justice had occurred. There is no precedent to have the fight anulled, but a rematch will most certainly now be mandated. That will definitely suit the promoters who will now earn mega-millions. Boxing really needs to take a long, hard look at itself following this, the Amir Khan fight and the fact that the biggest draw in the sport, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is currently in a cell.
These have been my views and my views alone ... blah, blah, blah ... until next time,
