STAR TREK Sequel Faces Possible Delay

Startrek

The STAR TREK sequel's June 29, 2012 release is a mere 13 months away, but the production is still plagued with fundamental problems: it has no script (just a 70-page outline), and J.J. Abrams has not officially boarded as director. Can the movie be put together in such a short span of time?

Deadline reports that Paramount is considering pushing back the film's opening to a holiday 2012 release in order to accommodate a new timeline. Abrams is expected to announce his return to the helm shortly after his duties promoting SUPER 8 are finished, and once he gives the outline his stamp of approval, screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof, and Roberto Orci can get down to business hammering out the script.

The reason for the delay is pretty simple. All the major players involved have been busy with other projects: Abrams, with SUPER 8; Kutzman, with WELCOME TO PEOPLE; Lindelof, with PROMETHEUS, and Orci, with COWBOYS AND ALIENS. With those projects now winding down, the crew can focus their attention on the sci-fi tentpole, even if it takes longer than expected to deliver the finished product to theaters.
