Actor Andy Serkis will be pulling double duty on Peter Jackson's adaptation of THE HOBBIT, which began filming in New Zealand in March. In addition to reprising his role as Gollum, Serkis will serve as the second unit director on the film, according to Heat Vision.
Serkis has much experience directing, including some experience with performance capture on such video games as HEAVENLY SWORD. Still, Serkis remarked that being tapped for the job was a surprise: "There was this e-mail out of the blue. It was a fantastic surprise."
On being second unit director for THE HOBBIT: "I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth...A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic."
