GEEK NOTES
Here are some Geek-centric basketball takes for you: I think I’ve picked up Ramon Sessions about five times this season. He’s active for me this week, so feel free to rest that strained hip and bruised ego, Mo Williams… Heading into my En Fuego League hoops draft, I was dead-set on owning either Kevin Love or Blake Griffin. But when the 21st pick came up, I didn’t pull the trigger, instead going with Danny Granger. Granger’s been fine, but he’s not a game-changer. The moral of the story is, when you have a strong feeling about players, it’s never TOO early…Just when my team was rolling along, tops in the league, the stupid Magic have to go and screw everything up by trading for a whole new team. In one fell swoop, two of my starting guards, Gilbert Arenas and Jameer Nelson, were rendered useless. What’s worse is that I can’t bring myself to cut them, so they’re just making my bench more clogged up than Anderson Varejao’s bathroom sink. Y’know, cuz of all the hair. Bad analogy. Let’s move on.
BIG BALLERS
(Stats are averages over the past seven days)
Jose Calderon (12.8 points, 12.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 2 steals) – The Spaniard’s stats have spiked in recent weeks after a rocky start to the season. The Jarrett Jack trade opened up more PT and Calderon isn’t passing it up.
Ramon Sessions (18 points, 7.5 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steals) – Two mentions for Ramon in one column! Here’s the perfect example of a great fantasy player whose game doesn’t translate to real life. That’s the only reason I can think of why he’s not a starter for the crappy Cavaliers. With injuries to “Boobie” Gibson (How’d he get that nickname? I just think of Stiffler’s little buddy in the movie Role Models who says “I like boobies.”) and Mo Williams, the offensive-minded back up went off. When court is in session for Sessions, the guy flat-out puts up digits.
Boris Diaw (14 points, 7 assists, 4.3 rebounds) –Those numbers are jacked up by the 25-11-11 triple-double Diaw recorded against the 76ers. Boris isn’t threatening to throw you numbers like those very often, but he’s still a solid source of points, rebounds and assists.
SUDDEN FALLERS
(Stats are averages over the past seven days)
Jrue Holiday (10 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 3 turnovers) – Coming off some monster games in Weeks 10 and 11, Jrue has been jreeling over the past week. The young PG should bounce back to his early season production soon.
Jason Kidd (5.8 points, 6.8 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 turnovers) – The old man is looking his age lately. He has two doughnuts in the points column in January. Missing Dirk hurt his game, but now that Nowitzki is back, look for Kidd to come strong with rebounds and assists.
Marc Gasol (10 points, 2.3 assists, 6 rebounds) – It wasn’t a terrible week for Gasol, so much as it’s been a disappointing season. Coming off of averages of 14 points and 9 boards last year, Gasol was supposed to be an up-and-comer in his age 25 season. Instead, he’s regressed and been a bit of a bust.
STAT THAT LOOKS LIKE A TYPO
19
That’s how many shots Blake Griffin hit in his 47-point explosion the other day. He only missed 5 shots. I’ve never seen anyone make this big of an impact this quickly in the NBA. Imagine if he didn’t sit last year out!
HOOPS HELP
Jose:
With all the injuries in Portland, like Brandon Roy and Marcus Camby, who will step it up?
The Fantasy Geek:
We’ve seen LaMarcus Aldridge really benefit and become the go-to guy for Portland. Look for him to build on his recent success. The other big winner, of course, is Wesley Matthews, who went from sixth man to starter. Matthews is putting up nice numbers in the points and 3-pointer categories. With Camby’s recent injury (out 3-5 weeks), you’ll see plenty of Joel Przybilla. (Did I spell that right? Of course I did. I’m The Geek!) He’s a good source of rebounds. Nicolas Batum should also see a spike in stats. Batum is a borderline add in 10-team leagues. With the minutes he’s getting, I’d pick him up if I had a bench spot to spare. Przybilla is only worth owning in deeper leagues, but don’t be surprised if he occasionally blows up. He’s posted some big lines in the past when given ample run.

Now that my Patriots were sent packing, baseball season can’t start soon enough. I’m starting to rank players in my head and I’ll get them down in type starting in February. Until then, it’s all basketball all the time. We’re still kicking around the idea of a hoops podcast, but nothing is set in stone right now. But we’ll get the chats up and running again. Sunday mornings work best for Si—and hopefully you too. Here’s the schedule of columns for next week:
ALL THE TIME – Look for our tweets with alerts for new posts and player updates: @TheFantasyGeek and @SiKorot
TUESDAY – Gettin’ Geek’d with The Geek’s latest strategies and advice
WEDNESDAY – The Geekly Update…if you’ve read this far, you know what it’s all about
THURSDAY – Pickin’ Winners by The Geek…I’ll still be posting my picks for Conference Championship Games
FRIDAY – Simon Says, with random thoughts from the mind of Si Korot
SUNDAY @ 12ET/9PT – NEW TIME! Hoops Help Live Chat with Si, all the info you need to set your lineup right for the upcoming week in fantasy basketball
SUNDAY – Hustle Points by Si, featuring the news, notes, pickups and injuries to keep an eye on for the week ahead in fantasy hoops
RUNNING OUT THE CLOCK
Things that popped into my head or my inbox during the past week…
>> Good news and bad news on the fantasy front for The Geek. First, the good news. I’ve been accepted as a member of the Fantasy Sports Writers Association. When it becomes official, I’ll post their logo on the site to prove that we’re on the up and up here. First bit of bad news is that I didn’t make it as a finalist for newcomer of the year in the FSWA annual awards. I’d like to give props to my competition:
- Jake Ciely of RotoExperts
- Mario Puig of RotoWire
- Lane Rizzardini of Bruno Boys Fantasy Football
May the best writer win. You can see the finalists for all of the categories here. And the other bad news is that the Fantasy Sports Trade Association big-timed me out of a spot in their experts’ fantasy baseball league. In 2010, I beat the Rotoworld, ESPN, KFFL and Fanball guys, coming in second by one frickin’ point to Ron Shandler, an industry legend. This year, Sirius XM Radio is covering the draft, so they only wanted high profile sites. Where’s the love for the little guy? Ah, they’re just scared they’ll lose to The Geek. Punks.
>> Here’s a video The Geek’s Wife submitted. I DARE you to wear this to your nexttailgating party…
>> Not that any program on FOX needs my promotional help, but I want to throw in a plug for one of their new shows. Check out the new animated show Bob’s Burgers on Sunday night at 8:30. The producers are friends of The Geek and one of them is a founding member of my fantasy baseball league, The California Penal League. Give it a watch. It’s funny.
Wishing I could’ve gotten the University of Oregon/Nike designers to hook us up with a crazy new layout,
