James Cameron and Guillermo del Toro are teaming up for a 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, according to Deadline.
MOUNTAINS will be del Toro's next directorial job, and James Cameron is being brought on board to produce for Universal. Cameron's expertise in 3D will prove invaluable when shooting begins next summer.
The project has reportedly been in development for years. It was first set up at DreamWorks in 2004 by del Toro and producers Susan Montford and Don Murphy, but Universal acquired the project in 2007. del Toro and Matthew Robbins collaborated on a script, which is now undergoing revision.
The Lovecraft story tells the tale of the true origin of mankind, revealed during an expedition to the South Pole in the 1930s. In the book, humans originated from the elder gods of another planet. Terrible things begin to happen when these gods are once again awakened.
