FANTASY HOOPS: THE 1ST ANNUAL GEEKY® AWARDS

Hello, and welcome to The Geekys®, TheFantasyGeek.com's first fantasy basketball awards show! You can check out the Fantasy Football Geekys® here. We’ll be handing out awards for the best moments and players from the 2009-2010 fantasy hoops season. Let me remind everyone about the criteria for winning a Geeky®. It’s not simply the best players that win. It’s the most valuable ones. For example, a fouth-round center who is third in fantasy scoring is worth more than a first-rounder who is a few points ahead.
Like the Grammys or the Oscars, we’ll begin with the obscure awards first and work our way up. Okay, it’s time to hand out our first award of the evening…
BEST PLAY
And the winner is…Kobe Bryant’s last-second 3-pointer to beat the Heat. Down 2 with 3.2 to go, Kobe launched a bomb that banked in as the horn sounded. Did he call “glass?” Doesn’t matter. Really, Bryant wins this award for his entire body of buzzer-beating work this season. He hit other amazing game-winners against the Kings, Bucks and Celtics too.
Kobe Bryant: “I’d like to thank…Michael Jordan for passing the torch to me.”
BEST GAME
No surprise here: LeBron James. On February 18, in a 118-116 loss to the Denver Nuggets, King James posted the most prolific triple-double we’ve seen in a long time. He lit up the score board with 43 points. Big deal, right? He does that all the time. But he also went off for 13 boards and 15 assists. And to top it off, he registered 2 steals and 4 blocks. That, my friends, is a jam-packed stat line.
LeBron James: “I’d like to thank…myself. I’m just frickin’ awesome.”
BEST ROOKIE
The Geeky® goes to…Tyreke Evans. The kid was balling from the start and really came strong when Kevin Martin got hurt. You have to wonder what Blake Griffin would’ve done, had he stayed healthy. But Tyreke was tremendous for his owners, posting averages of 20 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists. Not bad for a late-round flyer.
Tyreke Evans: “I’d like to thank…Derrick Rose, who paved the way for me by being the first guy to drop out of Memphis after one year who went on to win Rookie of the Year.”
BEST BREAKOUT PLAYER
Gotta give it to David Lee. Dammit. The secret is out on one of my favorite values after the season he had. Lee simply could not be ignored, as he led all NBA centers in scoring with over 20 points a game. Add in averages of 11.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and a steal a game and you’ve got an All-Star-caliber center who just took his game to new heights.
David Lee: “I’d like to thank…the Knicks front office for making the offense wide open for me by trading away every other offensive threat we had.”
BEST COMEBACK PLAYER
Has to be Josh Smith. Had a down season in 2008-2009 and missed 13 games due to injury. This year, he bounced back to be better than ever, with 15.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.6 spg and 2 bpg. He’s Andrei Kirilenko circa 2005. It took a while, but J-Smoove has officially lived up to the hype.
Josh Smith: “I’d like to thank…the statisticians because I know I keep them real busy.”
BEST PICK UP
It was between two guys here and I had to bring in Si, The Baskeball Guy to break the tie. And the winner is…Darren Collison, who edged Andray Blatche by a nose. When Chris Paul went down with a torn meniscus in his knee, Collison stepped in and New Orleans didn’t miss a beat. In fact, Collison’s numbers were so good that if you squinted a little while watching a Hornets game, you’d have sworn Chris Paul was still running the point. That’s impressive.
Darren Collison: “I’d like to thank…Chris for getting hurt and giving me the chance to show off my mad skills!”
BEST PLAYOFF PERFORMANCE
I’m going with Beno Udrih. Sure, he didn’t match LeBron shot for shot, but he came up huge for savvy owners who pounced on him late and inserted him into their lineups at fantasy crunch time. Over the past 21 days, Beno averaged 17 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. Not bad for a guy who was just swimming around in the free agent pool in lots of leagues.
Beno Udrih: “I’d like to thank…Si Korot for suggesting me to fantasy owners in his Hustle Points column.”
MOST VALUABLE GUARD
Dwyane Wade is your winner. All of the elite guys were just that. No huge surprises near the top of the list. D-Wade picked up where he left off last season and treated owners to a healthy season and healthy stat lines.
Dwyane Wade: “I’d like to thank…Charles Barkley for letting me into his Fave Five. Charles, guess what? I won a Geeky®. Did you ever win a Geeky®?”
MOST VALUABLE FORWARD
We’re going to spread the weath here and give the Geeky® to Carmelo Anthony (LeBron can’t win everything!). ‘Melo moved into the upper echelon of fantasy studs this season and easily outperformed his second-round draft position. The points came in bunches, as Anthony dropped in an average of 28.4 a game. He also chipped in 6.6 caroms and 3.3 helpers. If you want Carmelo next season, there’s a good chance you’ll need to spend a first-round pick to get him.
Carmelo Anthony: “My hair stylist for making me look gooooooood out on the court.”
MOST VALUABLE CENTER
Congratulations to David Lee. That makes 2 Geekys®. The Knicks would be crazy not to re-sign this guy in the offseason. The entire Knicks offense runs through him. How many other centers can you say that about these days?
David Lee: “Wow, two Geeky® Awards. I’m speechless.”
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
And the winner is…LeBron James. He also wins two Geeky® Awards this season. You can’t really even make a case for anyone else. In my points league, James averaged a career-high 53.4 fantasy points per game. That was a whopping 9 points more than any other player. Major separation. Sometimes the best value is the very first guy taken off the board.
LeBron James: “I’d like to thank….the people of Ohio. It’s been fun playing in front of you throughout my career and I’m going to miss…JUST KIDDING! I’m staying in Cleveland!”
Alright, we’re running long, so it’s time to end the show. Congratulations to all the winners and all of you who owned those players. Thank you for attending the 1st Annual Geeky® Awards for Fantasy Basketball. Stay tuned for your local news, except on the West Coast. Good night!
