With the 2010 Olympic Winter Games ready to take
over Vancouver in a little over a month, it appears as though the UFC
will follow suit this summer.
According to a report on mmajunkie.com, the Ultimate Fighting
Championship is preparing to hold UFC 115 in British Columbia on June
12 at GM Place. The event will be the first UFC fight card held on
Canadian soil, outside of Montreal.
In December, the Vancouver city council approved a two-year trial
period for mixed martial arts, which was exactly the opportunity the
UFC had been waiting for.
"Vancouver is sanctioned!!!," said UFC president Dana White via
Twitter, after hearing about the change in legislature. "Another one
down! Thanks to everyone in Vancouver who helped. See you in 2010."
White has continued to express his interest in expanding the promotions presence north of the border.
Canadian
fans are already looking forward to UFC 113 on May 1 which will take
place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, and will see light heavyweight
champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida reportedly take on Mauricio
"Shogun" Rua in a rematch of the main event of UFC 104.
Elsewhere in Canada, Ontario remains a challenge due to the
province's current refusal to sanction the sport, but White insists
that there will eventually be a breakthrough.
