NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire Dion Phaneuf In Blockbuster Trade

In a blockbusting deal, the Leafs have acquired star defenseman Dion Phaneuf forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie from the Calgary Flames. In exchange, the Flames get forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

The trade comes as both Toronto and Calgary have been having difficult seasons. In a strange historical coincidence, the deal comes 18 years and one month after the famous Toronto-Calgary trade that made Doug Gilmour a Maple Leaf.

As a Maple Leaf fan I couldn't be happier this morning.

Even though Phaneuf hasn't had his best season in Calgary Toronto is the perfect fit for him.  Coach Ron Wilson should be able to do a lot with Phaneuf and quickly have him leading the blue-line as their number one defenseman.

A trade seemed to be on the horizon when a few players came forward and announced their displeasure with the team and their playing time last week. Jamal Mayers was one of those players and his trade to Calgary (a rougher hitting team) should give him the change of scenery he wanted.

Feels like everybody wins here.

Of course.... the media in Toronto is beyond anything a normal sports star has to endure... but being in the hockey crowded city of Calgary... it shouldn't be new to Phaneuf when he arrives in Toronto.

Welcome to Hockey Town!
