HILL: Natalie Portman Pisses Me Off In ELLE U.K.

Before I get started, let me just say that I've met Natalie Portman twice (briefly) and she was very cool both times. In my opinion, she's the nicest version of the girls that I dealt with in private school (me being the stereotypical black scholarship kid in my teens. High school was a boot camp for talking to beautiful girls richer than me -- but I digress...)

Because she struck me as thoughtful and somewhat sensitive to her position as a celebrity, it irked me a little bit when I read this quote from her in ELLE U.K.

" It’s funny, some of my actress friends and I talk about how none of us have the big wedding obsession that other girls our age have, and I think it’s because what girls experience on their wedding day happens a few times a year for us: Any time you go to a premiere, you get your hair and makeup done and everyone is looking at you. "

Now I know she most likely didn't mean to piss people off with that, because she doesn't strike me as particularly confrontational -- but there's something in that statement equating a lifelong commitment to someone with having "your hair and makeup done and everyone is looking at you."

Maybe that says less about her specifically and about the culture in Hollywood-land. concerning love and commitment. I'm probably reading too much into it and need a glass of vegetable juice, but it did make my spider-sense tingle.

Portman's latest film, BROTHERS is opening in the U.K. Most of us ignored it in the states, but for those who don't know it's about Jake Gyllenhall and Tobey Mac fighting over her. Neither Jake or Toby strikes me as particularly tough so I wasn't compelled to watch it.

Now if you replaced them with 50 Cent and John Cena....

ELLE U.K. is on sale at select newsstands now.
