SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP ON CHUCK YET. WHICH YOU SHOULD. GO
WATCH NOW.
Chuck isn't the only one getting a character overall this
season; Devon aka Awesome has also been given a new dimension. And I
like it.
I don't know if this was planned from the beginning, but,
Awesome as Chuck's foil does track. You can see where with slightly
more classic good looks, and less abandonment, betrayal and tragedy in
family and love life, Chuck could have been Awesome. They both are
extremely smart, charismatic men who care more for other people than
themselves. However, when we first met Chuck and Awesome, Chuck was a
loser still living at home with a crappy job and no love life and
Awesome was the opposite in every way.
Now, at the beginning of season
three, Chuck is finally coming into his own with his own apartment, a
second cool career and... well, even if it is complicated, he does have a
love life. At the same time we are getting to see the less awesome
sides of Awesome; he craves more out of life, he gets scared and
flustered easily when out of his comfort zone and when he tries to help
with spy stuff he screws things up. In fact, Awesome in spy world is a
lot like Chuck from the first season.
Hopefully, they will not
end up with Awesome as a spy. The show needs the emotional
backbone that Ellie and Awesome as Chuck's family in the real world
supply. However, seeing Awesome go through the first steps of Chuck's
journey has highlighted our hero's character arc and given more screen
time and depth to the show's most lovable supporting character; two
things I am all for.
