KEEPIN’ IT ON THE D.L.

Surprisingly light week on injury front…

Ricky Nolasco is out for the season after tearing the meniscus in his knee. So much for another strong finish  . Andrew Miller grabbed Ricky’s rotation spot. He’s worth a look in NL-only leagues, but is risky in all others.

INKED & AXED

Here’s our take on the players fantasy owners are adding and dropping the most. (Change in Ownership Percentages via CBS Sports leagues)

Hot Commodities

Danny Espinosa (up 14%): Lots of owners must’ve caught that Nats game on Labor Day. Espinosa swatted two home runs and just missed a third. With 18 HRs in Triple-A this season, he’s a nice short-term add while he fills in for Ian Desmond.

Jordan Zimmermann (up 12%): A 6-inning, 1-hit, 9-strikeout performance last week and his 2-start status this week made Zim a popular pick up. But owners who rolled him out there (including me) got burned when the Nats stuck to his strict 80-pitch limit. Given their cautious use of the kid, he’s not worth owning until next year.

Barry Enright (up 12%): He came out of nowhere to grab a permanent spot in the D-Backs rotation. I keep waiting for the guy to get pounded, but with five quality starts in six outings, he’s quickly gaining the confidence of skeptical fantasy owners.

Nothing wrong with owning Enright.

Cold Product

Rich Harden (down 10%): So much talent, so little consistency. These days, Harden’s coming out of the pen—and out of fantasy lineups.

Jonathan Broxton (down 9%): One of the shockers of the season. Joe Torre says things will be “status Kuo” in the Dodgers bullpen for the rest of ’10, meaning Hong-Chih Kuo will remain the closer. As painful as it may be, you need to dump Brox like a bag of rocks.

Dustin Moseley (down 9%): Down 9%? I’m surprised he was even owned in that many leagues. Must be because he’s in the pinstripes. Well, just ask AJ Burnett and Javier Vazquez how overrated that can be.

BIG SURPRISES

Guys who stepped up over the past week:

Carlos Gonzalez (.517 BA, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 SB) – Sure, he’s been doing this a lot lately. But overall, this is one helluva surprising season. Car-Go’s making a run at the Triple Crown and could be the #1 pick in drafts next year. Crazy, right?

Neil Walker (.481 BA, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 8 R) – Speaking of next year’s draft. This guy’s steadily improving his 2011 draft value. The steady pop bodes well for Walker’s fantasy future.

J.A. Happ
(16 IP, 11 H+BB, 2 ER, 11 K, 2 W) – I don’t get why the sabermetricians were so down on Happ coming into the season. He had a nice ERA and is young enough to bring down his peripherals. Which is exactly what he’s doing. Nice trade, Astros.

SUDDEN DEMISES

Stars who stumbled:

Albert Pujols (.050, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 1 R) – I don’t believe my eyes.

Andre Ethier (.173 BA, 0 HR, 0 R, 0 RBI) – Pretty much a bad thing to own any Dodgers hitters lately.

James Shields (4.1 IP, 9 H+BB, 6 ER, L) – Just when you thought it was safe to get him back into your starting lineup…

Shields needs a shield fend off all the hard-hit balls he’s giving up this season.

STAT THAT LOOKS LIKE A TYPO…BUT ISN’T

0.45

That’s Torii Hunter’s pitiful success rate on stolen bases this year. And I thought Matt Kemp’s pace was a joke. Hunter has just 9 steals in 20 attempts.

HARDBALL HELP

Juan: Is the new Nationals pitcher, Yunesky Maya, worth picking up in a 12-team league?

The Fantasy Geek: Juan, Yunesky Maya is a very appealing free agent. The 28-year-old Cuban import fared very well in his brief stint at Triple-A Syracuse. If your team is in a comfortable position heading into the last few weeks, I don’t recommend the risk. But if you’re ready to roll the dice to make a late move, you might just catch lightning in a bottle with Maya.

FANTASY BASEBALL: HOOTS & HOLLERS

MUTTERINGS OF A MADMAN: Many fantasy owners of Josh Hamilton will be praying for a quick return to action... So, Hong-Chih Kuo is the Dodgers’ closer- again! Hopefully, manager Joe Torre works him no more than one inning in a game, as going beyond that seems to be a weakness...

FANTASY SPORTS: HOOTS & HOLLERS

Fantasy owners hold their breath for Johan Santana's injury... Johan Santana left his game early yesterday with a strained pectoral muscle last night. This makes many fantasy owners in a playoff races might nervous, though Santana is playing it down. Hopefully he is being sincere, cause it is hard to...

KEEPIN’ IT ON THE D.L.

Ian Stewart strained the ol’ oblique and he’s on the shelf until mid-September. Melvin Mora and Clint Barmes will get more playing time in his absence.

Edwin Encarnacion is out of the Blue Jays lineup with a bum wrist. Jose Bautista will be shifting to 3B while he’s out.

Jerry Hairston has halted his ultra-utilityman act due to a sore elbow. The Padres recalled Everth Cabrera to help out.

INKED & AXED

Here’s our take on the players fantasy owners are adding and dropping the most. (Change in Ownership Percentages via CBS Sports leagues)

Hot Commodities

Carlos Zambrano (up 12%): I had a feeling he’d be worth something eventually this season. In a recent chat, I recommended grabbing Zambrano, with the caveat that his WHIP won’t be pretty. He’s walking batters left and right, but managing to get out of jams.

Koji Uehara (up 12%): Move over Alfredo Simon, there’s a new closer du jour in Bal’more. I actually like Koji more than anyone else who’s been in the role this season. Buck Showalter may opt to use Mike Gonzalez in lefty-heavy situations though.

Hey, Koji: Uehara really good pick up right now.

Ivan Nova (up 11%): In Spanish, his name translates to “doesn’t go,” but after a couple of strong outings, Ivan gets a green light. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a lot more valuable than AJ Burnett the rest of the way.

Cold Product

Edinson Volquez (down 21%): Too soon. Volquez is still a good pitcher, but he needs more time to rebound from his surgery. Just look how long it took Francisco Liriano to come all the way back. So the Reds are moving Ed to the bullpen for now. And owners are moving on.

Stephen Strasburg (down 18%): One-year leaguers are obviously dropping the kid. Keeper leaguers should too. dynasty leaguers are the only ones who should even consider holding Strasburg. But 12-18 months is looooong time to wait.

Pat Burrell (down 7%): Shocker. Everyone who grabbed him during his recent power surge was let down after his 3-for-18 week. Couldn’t have seen that coming.

BIG SURPRISES

Guys who stepped up over the past week:

Stephen Drew (.500 BA, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 10 R) – Whoa. He finally awoke from his year-and-a-half-long fantasy coma.

Marcus Thames (.470 BA, 5 HR, 8 RBI) – Thames is earning steady at bats with all that pop and a is a nice play right now in really deep leagues and in AL-Only.

Rick Porcello
(14 IP, 6 H+BB, 0 ER, 8 K, 2 W) – First, Max Scherzer got sent down to the minors and then came back with a vengeance. Now Porcello is making the Tigers brass look like a bunch of geniuses for making timely demotions.

SUDDEN DEMISES

Stars who stumbled:

Jose Reyes (.083, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R) – Throw in an oblique injury and it was a very forgetful week for Reyes.

Mike Stanton (.000 BA, 0 HR, 0 R, 0 RBI, 8 K) – The rookie took a goose egg at the plate and has proven to be extremely streaky.

AJ Burnett (3.1 IP, 11 H+BB, 8 ER, L) – Anyone still starting Burnett probably wants to burn him at the stake. Deactivate him in ALL leagues.

STAT THAT LOOKS LIKE A TYPO…BUT ISN’T

17

That’s how many earned runs the formerly reliable Jeff Niemann has coughed up in two starts (8.1 IP) since coming off the DL. I guess it’s safe to say everything’s still not alright with his arm.

HARDBALL HELP

Ray Ray: I am thinking of benching Lincecum. Not worth starting?

The Fantasy Geek: Ray Ray, I feel ya. I’m in the same boat. He’s been awful, yielding 4 or more runs in his past 4 starts. Tough to sit a guy who’s supposed to be your ace, but I wouldn’t blame you. I might sit him, but I’m not playing for anything this week, so it’s not a big decision for me. He’s up against Ubaldo, which may inspire him to rebound. I see him giving up 2-3 runs, but not getting a win. Let’s hope he ends the year heading in the right direction.
