Despite the underwhelming performance of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO at the box office since its release on December 20 - it has grossed a paltry $60 million domestically -  Sony intends to adapt the second book in the Millenium trilogy, THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE.

A Sony rep told Entertainment Weekly that "[THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book."

While DRAGON TATTOO scribe Steve Zaillian is working on the script to the sequel, it is unclear whether or not David Fincher will return to direct. Stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are signed on for two more films.

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE is aiming for a late 2013 release.
