Amid early praise for her role in BLACK SWAN, Natalie Portman has been offered the female lead role in Alfonso Cuaron's 3D space survival story GRAVITY, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The studio reportedly approved Portman without requiring a screen test. Portman is expected to make her decision shortly, once she reads the latest draft of the script.
Angelina Jolie was originally interested in playing the lead in GRAVITY, but ultimately passed on the role. Her decision left the project scrambling for a new star; among the many names being considered were Rachel Weisz, Sandra Bullock, Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde, Scarlett Johansson, and Blake Lively - all of whom had either screen tested or spoken with producers.
If Portman signs on, she will be joining co-star Robert Downey, Jr. in the thriller, which was written by Cuaron's son Jonas. The script follows a woman named Ryan Stone, an engineer doing repairs on a space shuttle, as she makes her way back to earth following a satellite crash.
