KEEPIN' IT ON THE D.L.

Plenty of guys day-to-day with the flu and lots more out of action for 15 or more…

Asdrubal Cabrera fractured his forearm and will likely require surgery. Just a side note: a guy in one of my league’s once called him “Ass Dribble.” That made me laugh. Jason Donald got the call in Asdrubal’s stead.

Andre Ethier couldn’t bear the pain of a broken pinkie finger and was forced to the DL. Sucks for Ethier owners who were riding high on his red-hot start. Reed Johnson and Garret Anderson will fill in. Don’t bother.

Scott Hairston was putting together a nice little season with 6 HR and 3 SB. That will now be put on hold for a couple of weeks while he nurses his hurtin’ hammy back to health. Chris Denorfia was called up to take Hairston’s place. He’ll hit for a decent average and could swipe a few bags.

Travis Snyder was on a tear…until he tore up his wrist and hit the list. The recently healed Edwin Encarnacion returned to 3B, while Jose Bautista now occupies Snyder’s outfield spot.

Mark DeRosa’s not feeling DeRosy these days. A wrist injury has landed him on the shelf for 15. John Bowker and Eugenio Velez will step up in his absence.

Justin Duchscherer was scheduled to take the mound over the weekend, but his hip pain was still buggin’. Sadly, the guy probably needs another season-ending surgery. Trevor Cahill could remain in the A’s rotation and is worth a look.

Brad Lidge is making his owners stand out on the ledge again. This time, his shoulder has him sidelined. There’s a good chance Jose Contreras is already owned in your league. If not, grab him if you need saves.

INKED & AXED

Here’s our take on the players fantasy owners are adding and dropping the most. (Change in Ownership Percentages via CBS Sports leagues)

Hot Commodities

Jeff Francis (up 20%): One good start has washed away two years of injuries. Personally, I need to see him string together a few more quality starts before I get frantic about Francis.

Johnny Cueto (up 16%): Firing a one-hitter will tend to get you added a bunch. But there was no quit in Cueto, as he followed up his shutout with a solid 7-inning, 1-run game. He’s been roller-coastery in the past, but he’s worth taking for a spin right now.

This is your cue to add Cueto.

Luke Scott (up 15%): A few big flies combined with the demotion of Nolan Reimold has turned Scott into a hot commodity. Scott’s a decent bet for 20-25 HR, with an average in the .260s. Problem is, he’s still in a platoon shuffle and the Orioles promoted Corey “Remember Me?” Patterson to sop up outfield at bats. Temper your expectations here.

Cold Product

Chris Snyder (down 16%): Seems premature to dump Snyder, since Miguel Montero’s still out a while longer. Oh, wait. I see why he’s getting dumped. It’s the .225 average and the fact that he’s 3 for his last 26. Probably okay to cut bait.

Jonathon Niese (down 16%): Your typical 2-start streaming disaster. Niese was not nice in either of his Week 6 outings, reminding owners why streaming is hazardous to your health. He left his second start with an injured hammy and could be headed for the DL. Drop him.

John Maine (down 15%): There’s a special on Mets starters on aisle 9! Maine hasn’t been terrible lately. A 5 IP/12 H+BB/6 ER effort got him dumped, yet he had only yielded 5 ER in his previous 18 innings. I’m not a huge fan of the guy, but if you need Ks, you could do worse.

BIG SURPRISES

Guys who stepped up over the past week:

Troy Glaus (10-24, 3 HR, 7 RBI) – After a bit of a slow start, Glaus has boosted his average and is starting to get that power stroke going. I have to admit, at my draft, I announced him as my big sleeper…then I bailed on him after his slow start. D’oh!

Martin Prado
(11-30 BA, 3 HR, 11 RBI) – The Braves offense really came alive last week and Prado was the sparkplug. However, while frequenting the basepaths, he tweaked his groin and missed Monday’s game. Shouldn’t slow him down for long.

Daisuke Matsuzaka
(7 IP, 3 H+BB, 1 ER, 9 K, 1 W) – Suckered in plenty of owners (including me) who saw the line from last week’s gem and rolled the Dice for 2 starts in Week 7. All he did was implode vs. NY on Monday, with a scary start against the Phillies looming later in the week. So, yeah, 1 run in 7 innings last week was a pleasant surprise.

SUDDEN DEMISES

Stars who stumbled:

Austin Jackson (3-25, 0 HR, 2 R) – Uh oh. There’s the slump just about everyone knew was coming. The big question now is can he shake it off and get back to being a solid lead-off man. I’m benching him for now.

If the 2010 season were a game of Chutes ‘n’ Ladders, I think Jackson would be on that big-ass slide in the middle of the board.

Victor Martinez (1-18, 0 HR, 3 RBI) – An awful Week 6 for Vic, but he’s already turned things around in Week 7, going deep twice on Monday. Nothing to worry about here.

Max Scherzer (5 IP, 8 H+BB, 6 ER, L) – Mad Max was fine in his first 4 starts and apocalyptic in his past 4. In a bit of a surprise move, the Tigers sent Scherzer down to AAA. This looks like a pretty good buy low opportunity if the guy with Scherzer in your league has lost patience.

STAT THAT LOOKS LIKE A TYPO…BUT ISN’T

7

That’s how many wins Washington set-up man Tyler Clippard has…as many as Ubaldo Jimenez and more than ANYONE else! Fun with projections: Clippard is on pace for a 29-12 record. Absurd.
