FANTASY HOOPS: RANTS & RAVES

Unpleasant Spur-prise!
Words of advice from theFantasyGeek.com
San Antonio guard Tony Parker broke the fourth
metacarpal in his hand and could miss six weeks. Having done that myself
twice, I can say with knowledge that this is not a fast-healing injury
and his season is pretty much over.
As the Spurs continue to fight for a playoff spot, you can expect the
team’s other point guard, George Hill, to not only
continue contributing points and assists, but to be even more
valuable. You see, Parker has already missed a whole lotta games this
season with all sorts of maladies, and Hill has proven himself as a
sufficient NBA point guard on a contending team full of scorers. He is
no Darren Collison, but we can expect to see 18 points
and 8 assists on most nights.
Hill’s understudy should be Roger Mason, Jr, who
takes on some value here in deep category leagues for those who need an
added source of assists and steals. Manu Ginobli should
handle the ball a bit more in crunch time, adding more assists to his
recently spiked stats. Richard Jefferson, who we have
previously noted to be heating up as well, should kick in some extra
scoring to make up for the missing Parker. Thus, we see another NBA
injury with a silver lining. Unless you own Parker, that is.
One of the players I have been most tweeted, texted, emailed and IM’d
about recently (it’s only a matter of time until I’m accosted in the
street) is Indiana PG TJ Ford. So to answer all in one
broad swoop, yes, he is for real because his coach is using
him. He is a good source of assists and steals and will also get around
10 points on most nights when he plays 30 minutes. This time of year,
good waiver grabs are hard to come by, so if you have a spot to fill on
your roster, he is, indeed, a good grab…For those of you who asked me
about the Bill Walker craze, I did say that he was just
a fill-in for Wilson Chandler while he was out dealing
with personal matters. Coach D’Antoni is too high on Chandler to give
his spot away, so if somebody panicked and drop WC, do the right thing
and snatch him up…If you need a filler at center, Anthony
Tollver is the flavor of the week in Golden State, averaging 14
& 7 in his last six. Those numbers could go up a bit more, with Ronny
Turiaf joining Andris Biedrins on the
sidelines with injury…PG Mario Chalmers should again
see an up-tick in value with his Miami Heat teammate Rafer
Alston indefinitely suspended by the team.
Composite leaguers, note that three teams have two games in the week
to come. You might want to avoid using all Lakers other than Kobe
Bryant and Pau Gasol, all Suns other than
Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire and most of
the Houston Rockets. While Houston guards Kevin Martin
and Aaron Brooks have the potential to occasionally go
off for an awesome game, it is a bit of a risk to count on them.
