The Recycling Truck: Columbia, Paramount to continue rash of 80's remakes

Come on folks, aint nothing sacred anymore?
I know being retro is "in," but this is getting ridiculous. With an absence of new and fresh material, Hollywood continues to roll out uch-worthy remakes, one decade at a time. Now I guess we're in the midst of a run on 1980's remakes. Yes, that unfortunately means that many of our childhood favorites are being repackaged, reprocessed and slapped together for the mainstream and thrown into every multiplex in Anytown, USA. In recent years we have seen mediocre-at-best recreations of films like Fame and Friday the 13th and in the next year or so will see "new" takes on Karate Kid, Tron, and Nightmare on Elm Street, among others. Well, it looks like we can add at least two more to the list...
1. As if J-Lo hasn't gone overboard enough by saturating the mainstream with her tired act, now she really IS going Overboard. That's right, the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn rom com from the late 80's will be back. Columbia Pictures is investing some significant cash to remake a movie that people never even talk about unless a) you're an 80's movie geek like me or b) you happen to flip to TBS and catch one of its four yearly broadcasts. Not sure I agree with that spending decision, but to each their own. In a semi-autobigraphical role, J-Lo will reprise the Goldie Hawn character as a self-centered and egotistical bitch who needs to be brought back to reality. Won't require much acting range to nail that character. Can we pencil her in for a 2012 Oscar right now?
2. And this next one really gets my goat. This remake is even more obscure than Overboard, but still has a huge cult following and is chalked full of 80's goodness. Paramount actually has the gal to remake Monster Squad! Rob Cohen, who is best known for directing films such as The Skulls, xXx, and Stealth, and who produced the 1987 original, will take his turn at directing the remake. Cohen will produce the film with Platinum Dunes, Michael Bay's shingle (figures). My favorite post that I read about this, which will get a chuckle from those of you who really remember the original, was "Michael Bay has nards remaking Monster Squad!" What I want to know, is how can a remake do justice to such great roles as Tom Noonen as Frankenstein and Jason Hervey (known to most as Wayne from The Wonder Years) as EJ, the local bully??? Those are some cinematically epic characters right there! And who could forget Horace???
I've also heard they're been talking about remaking Goonies for years. If that ever happens, remind me to lose my lunch. Come on Hollywood, maybe something brand spanking new this year? What do you say?
