Sad news in the world of music.
Mark Linkous aka Sparklehorse took his own life Saturday March 6th outside of a friend's home. Linkous was a prolific talent, one that was heralded by all from Radiohead to Tim Burton to Danger Mouse. The lions' share of Linkous's work were sensitive and beautiful albums dealing with suffering and pain, something Linkous was no stranger to.
in 1996 while touring with Radiohead Linkous overdosed on a combination of alcohol and drugs which left him unconscious for 14 hours with his legs pinned beneath him. The musician was confined to a wheel chair and required multiple surgeries for his legs to regain their function.
Things had been looking up for Linkous starting in 2006 when he released one of his finest albums "Dreamt for Light Years In The Belly Of The Mountain" and then returned two years later with a contribution to Nightmare Revisited a comp featuring re-imagined songs from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas.
Last week it was confirmed that his long languishing project with David Lynch & Danger Mouse "Dark Night Of The Soul" would be released after a lengthy legal battle. Linkous has also neared completion of a new Sparklehorse album due to be released on the Anti- record label. His family released this statement via sparklehorse.com"
"It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you."
On a personal note Sparklehorse was one of those projects I stumbled upon by accident and totally fell in love with. It's so rare that a talent like Mark Linkous comes to us that when he's gone the absence is truly felt. There is a gaping hole in the world of music and creativity now. I never met the man but I mourn his loss.
