Singer Gives X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Update

As we all know Bryan Singer's turn on Superman wasn't the best movie ever made. It had its moments but essentially Singer brought his darker X-Men view to the bright world of Superman and when the smoke cleared it failed. Realizing that Singer announced back in December that he was on board to direct a new X-Men movie titled First Class, which looked at the early stages of the X-Men school and the relationship between Professor X and Magneto.

Since then it's been quiet on that front but this week Singer surfaced again talking in more detail about the project. The director claims the focus of the story will be where Professor X and Magneto's friendship soured as well as involving early incarnations of Jean Grey, Cyclops & Beast.

Singer put it this way:

"Just doing younger mutants is not enough. The story needs to be more than that. I love the relationship between Magneto and Xavier, these two men who have diametrically opposite points of view but still manage to be friends — to a point. They are the ultimate frenemies."

As to why he's excited to return Singer had this to say:

"I genuinely like the people, and my personality meshes more with this universe than it does with other universes, I think; I see that now at this point," Singer said. "I feel a connection to the X-Men characters and also the ensemble nature of the films. If you look at 'Usual Suspects” or my last film, 'Valkyrie,' I feel especially comfortable with ensemble juggling. In the space between all the characters you can disguise a central thought that's hidden in all the discourse. I missed that with the singular relationship story of Superman. And, well, it always gives you something to cut to…"

Interestingly enough Singer has been offered three X-Men movies to direct including First Class, the next Wolverine movie and the continuation of the series that ended with X-Men: Last Stand (a film horribly slapped together by hack director Brett Ratner). Singer did meet for lunch with Hugh Jackman recently but claims he's focused on First Class for now.

Personally I'd like to see him direct the next X-Men chapter. An earlier X-men film seems like a waste of time at best and at worst a cheap studio trick to jump on the reboot wagon without admitting it. I wasn't a fan of the first X-Men movie but loved the second one. The third was a craptacular exercise in director ego and incompetence and I would love to see Singer go in and make it right with a fourth movie.

That's just my opinion, either way I'm glad Singer's back in the mutant fold.
