The Atlanta Thrashers look to have parted ways with the
most celebrated player in franchise history, trading star winger Ilya Kovalchuk
to the New Jersey Devils.
The Thrashers acquired defenseman John Oduya,
forwards Niclas Bergfors
and Patrice Cormier
and the Devils first round pick in 2010.
The Devils also receive defenseman Anssi Salmela in
the deal. New Jersey traded Salmela to Atlanta last March for Niclas Havelid.
Kovalchuk, 26, became the subject of trade rumors recently after
reports surfaced that he could not come to terms on a multi-year
contract with general manager Don Waddell. The Russian sniper is in the
final year of his current contract and is eligible to become an
unrestricted free agent on July 1.

After declining a 12-year $101 Million contract to stay with the Atlanta Thrashers, Ilya Kovalchuk is now "officially" leaving Atlanta to join Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils.
This is a smart trade for New Jersey - which now gets the second scorer that they have SO desperately needed. It will be interesting to see what they do with Zach Parise. Do you move him to the right or put him on the second line?
Both Boston and New York were in the hunt for Kovalchuk, but New Jersey is the best possible place he could have landed. This is a team that is known for winning championships and with Ilya the Devils just might be able to kiss Lord Stanley - once again - when the playoffs arrive in April.
