LEAGUE OF LEGENDS Passes 1M Downloads In First 3 Months

LoL

On February 4, 2010,  Los Angeles based indie wunderkind Riot Games announced that after only three months since the title’s debut, League of Legends has been downloaded by more than 1 million gamers (with more than 150,000 gamers in competing in daily League of Legends rounds in both North America and Europe) and the free-to-play MMO Battle Arena game has won several awards from the video games press and community, including PC Gamer, IGN.com and GameSpy.com.

“The passion of our more than 1 million-member League of Legends community and their positive support has driven the recognition from media and the video game industry. This recognition and Riot Games’ ability to deliver high quality online free-to-play games serves as tremendous momentum as we expand the game globally in 2010.” -Brandon Beck, co-founder and CEO of Riot Games.

Here’s a wee smackerel of their accolades and statistics:

-IGN.com Readers’ Choice - “Best Strategy Game”

-IGN.com Readers’ Choice - “Best Multiplayer Game”

-GameSpy.com Gamers’ Choice – “PC Game of the Year”

-PC Gamer – “DotA-Style Game of the Year”

-Players have logged more than 18 million hours within the game

-150,000 gamers in North America and Europe play each day

NOTE: League of Legends is ALSO currently nominated for “Best Debut” by the Game Developers Choice Awards 2010. Winners will be announced at the 2010 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on March 11.

“We are pleased that our debut title is growing so quickly and receiving this type of praise from the video games community,” added Marc Merrill, co-founder and president of Riot Games. “These awards, nominations, positive reviews and our large, vocal community show that League of Legends is one of the best online gaming experiences available and we are appreciative of the recognition.”

I played LoL at E3 and being a former “WoW Widow”, I was super gun shy about the game, especially since I’m almost strictly a console gamer. After playing a couple rounds, I gotta say it definitely renewed my interest in MMOs and I actually heard myself talking junk and laughing (the TRUE sign that “Crix likes it”)

The battle rounds are right around 30 minutes, which insures plenty of fun with friends and players from around the globe and less yelling of “You NEVER spend time with me!” from significant others.

Keep an eye out for these guys, they’re about to pwn your world.
