Google's effort to create the world's largest library by scanning millions of books for use on the Internet faces a courtroom fight as authors, foreign governments, corporate rivals and even the U.S. Department of Justice line up to challenge it.
U.S. District Judge Denny Chin already has read more than 500 submissions about a $125 million settlement aimed at ending a pair of 2005 lawsuits brought by authors and publishers and clearing legal obstacles to a gigantic online home for digital books.
In court papers submitted last week, Google Inc., which is based in Mountain View, Calif., defended its deal with authors by saying its digital library lives up to copyright law's purpose of creating and distributing expressive works.

Google is facing opposition from all over on this one. Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo are all heavily working against the settlement. The nations of France and Germany, as well, have come out against the project and are supporting a European based system instead.
It's been a turbulent year on the PR front for Google, including their recent issues in China and public criticism from Apple's Steve Jobs. They are seemingly omnipresent and feathers are clearly being ruffled.
