FANTASY BASEBALL: Podcast Review

For a while now, I’ve been investigating the possibility of doing a podcast at TheFantasyGeek.com. But I’m still plodding through process. Meanwhile, I’m sampling other fantasy baseball podcasts to learn the the tricks of the trade. I’ll review a few of them for you guys, so you can tune in to the show of your choice. And our podcast should be ready to go by mid-March (fingers crossed).
ESPN’s Fantasy Focus Baseball, hosted by Matthew Berry and Nate Ravitz
I’ve been listening to this one since last season. From what I’ve heard fantasy fans say, Berry is polarizing. People either love him or hate him. At first, I have to admit, I wasn’t a big fan. But he’s grown on me like a beard on Ryan Franklin. He cracks some jokes and keeps things light. His partner, Nate Ravitz, is the straight man. I actually enjoy when Ravitz is quick to correct a Berry mistake. They have nice chemistry and their self-deprecating humor makes for a fun listen.
RotoExperts’ Experts Edge, hosted by Scott Engel/Bill Root
This podcast won an award at the Fantasy Sports Trade Association Conference, so I figured I’d check it out. I’ve only listened to a few episodes so far. RotoExperts does podcasts for a whole bunch of sports, so you have to pick and choose what you want. The baseball show has a nice, laid-back feel. It’s like you’re hanging out at a sports bars talking baseball with your buddies. In the episodes I downloaded, they did a lot of quick hit topics and jammed a lot of current info in the hour-long program. Experts Edge is a good way to keep up with all the big stories and hear the analysts’ takes.
Baseball HQ Radio, hosted by Patrick Davitt
Now this one’s hardcore. It has a PBS vibe to it, with audio clips of classic baseball moments. Feels like something Ken Burns would’ve put together. These guys really know their stuff. Baseball HQ is big on analyzing statistics and developing theories and draft strategies. They split the show up into a bunch of segments, including AL news, NL news, the Minor League Minute and Market Pulse, which covers over- and undervalued stats. Then, Baseball HQ boss, Ron Shandler, rants on various topics such as DH as a position and high stakes leagues. If you’re a real stat geek, this is the podcast for you. If you like a few jokes mixed in with your analysis, you may be better off with the ESPN show.
All of these shows are available for free on iTunes. Just do a search in the iTunes Store. I think you can also download them as mp3 files too.
My commute is only so long and I can’t listen to every podcast out there. If you’ve got a favorite, let me know. Just leave a reply at the bottom of this column. Thanks and happy listening!
