Muse on VAMPIRE DIARIES: Vampires Are White, Witches Are Black

Or so "The Vampire Diaries" teaches us...
Casting
white actors as Vampires makes some visual sense, since it fits with
the majority of our culture's origin myths on immortal blood sucking
monsters (plus it is easier to make a white guy look like Robert
Pattinson). But it makes a lot less sense that the only black
characters we have seen so far on "The Vampire Diaries" are all witches
- unless it turns out that bartender-in-Atlanta Bree (Gina Torres) is
Bonnie's mother.
In general, it would be nice if the CW threw more than just a token minority into any of their shows. There
are all kinds of moral and business-sense reasons for having more
diverse casts on television. But, if it turns out that Bree IS Bonnie's
mother, the biggest reason it would have been good for "The Vampire
Diaries" to cast a couple more non-white actors is so the plot twist
wouldn't have been so incredibly obvious.
