Apparently Tony La Russa Still Thinks Mark McGwire Still Has Some Juice Left In The Tank

I think Tony La Russa is back on the sauce. The good folks over at FANHOUSE report that he thinks it might be a good idea to waste a roster spot on Mark McGwire's pimply forehead. I respect Tony's attempts to clean up Mark's image so he has a shot at making the Hall Of Fame but do we really need this. What is next, a spot in the bullpen for Roger Clemens.
While many people have wondered this offseason about Tony La Russa's choice to hire Mark McGwireas his hitting coach, La Russa's confidence in the former slugger isn't wavering. He told the Contra Costa Timesthat he's not only sure that McGwire will be a big success as a coach, he's actually considering (well, he calls it a "dream") adding him to his roster for pinch hitting purposes at the end of the season if the team is in playoff contention.
McGwire has been retired since 2001 and will be 47 in October, which makes this whole dream of La Russa's seem more than a little insane. There's already going to be an intense spotlight on McGwire when spring training starts, and even the mere possibility that he could take some cuts in an actual game will magnify that exponentially.
McGwire was added to La Russa's coaching staff shortly after the season ended and to date, he still hasn't met with the media to discuss his hiring, the accusations of past steroid usage, or his incredibly vague testimony before Congress during the 2005 steroid hearings. Now that the Hall of Fame voting is said and done with, that can be added to the list of topics people will undoubtedly want McGwire to discuss as well.
