It appeared as though a training camp of bitterness between Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall and head coach Josh McDaniels was buried in the past. But Friday the latest chapter in the Marshall saga unfolded, with the receiver benched for Sunday's pivotal game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The decision to bench Marshall, who set an NFL record earlier this year when he recorded 21 receptions in a game, was announced by McDaniels Friday, according to ESPN.

The contention between player and coach stems from Marshall's injury, or perceived injury. Marshall suffered a hamstring injury earlier this week in practice, and his status for Sunday's game was uncertain even prior to the benching.

But McDaniels questioned the strength and toughness of Marshall, stressing the idea of accountability when speaking to the media.

"Our word for the week has been accountability," said McDaniels. "And we're looking to put the 45 guys on the field on Sunday that want to play together, want to help us try to win and qualify for the playoffs."

"Anybody that shows any indifference to that, we'll play without them," he added.

McDaniels believes Marshall is exaggerating the seriousness of his injury, an act he will not tolerate on a team with other players who are playing through the aches and pains common at the end of a grueling season.

"There's a number of players that are going to play on Sunday with things that are much more difficult to deal with than what he has," said the 33-year-old rookie coach.

Although Marshall said he respected his coach's decision, he refuted the accusations made by McDaniels.

Marshall noted that McDaniels has never gone through the grind of a professional football seaon before.

"I don't think coach ever played in the NFL, so for my hamstring to be feeling the way it felt, it's tough for me to go out there and expect to play at a high level," Marshall said.

"I've battled through a whole lot of injuries before. I played the whole year last year with a tear in my hip. So, I don't think my toughness is in question here."

Marshall leads the team with 101 catches for 1,120 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns this season.

To reach the postseason, the Broncos (8-7) need a win in the regular season finale in addition to some help in other games involving AFC contenders.
