Monday Night Raw Live Coverage: What Was I Thinking?

. "Only good things will happen."  is what Shawn Michaels said to Vince McMahon last week, and we're reminded via video footage...

Justin Roberts introduces Bret Hart with no theme and no pyro.  Hart gave his salute to the fans, grabbed a mic, and proclaimed, "I guess hell froze over."  Said Vince barred him from returning a few times in the past 12 years, but it's good to be back.  He mentioned that he won King of the Ring here, and Lawler beat him up right afterwards.   He then...wait for it...called out Shawn.

Bret said he wanted to bury the hatchet.  And HBK superkicked him into next week.  PSYCH.  No, Shawn feels bad too, and he's been carrying around Montreal for 12 years, and let's be friends.   And they shake and end of segment.   What this means in the bigger picture remains to be seen, but fans have been waiting for that moment for a looooong time.

Randy Orton vs. Kofi Kingston was plugged for later in the show... [C]

The Divas Championship tournament is announced, due to Melina's injury.   The following cribbed from Rich Twilling at prowrestling.net.    Thanks, Rich:

1. Maryse defeated Brie Bella (with Nikki Bella) to advance in the Divas Championship tournament in 2:15. It was very sloppy and the Bella Twins actually pulled the switch. Maryse saw it though and hit the French Kiss for the win. She pinned Nikki but officially beat Brie...

After the match, The Miz, with sweet new entrance music, came out to approach Maryse on the ramp. He spoke French and English to Maryse and said if she wins the tournament, he might call her back. He said 2010 would be not the year of Maryse, this year, this decade, and every moment will belong to The Miz. He said he was awesome and came down to the announce booth...

FATAL FOUR WAY FOR #1 CONTENDER SLOT, UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP:

MVP vs. Jack Swagger vs. Mark Henry, vs. Carlito, Miz on commentary.  Henry starts by tossing everyone out of the ring.   After Carlito gets dumped outside,   MVP hits his finisher on Swagger for the three.  Gonna be Miz vs. MVP for the US Title.  Good match-up.  Miz is golden on the mic.

JeriShow were talking backstage, and Jericho said that he didn't want to get kicked off of Raw, so he was going to Bret Hart and make him an offer he couldn't refuse...

Jericho ran into Bret talking to a kid.  Jericho went on about the Dungeon, and how he made Keith Hart tap there...he invited Bret to the special guest ref for the D-X/Jerishow match, so he could get HBK and HHH back for Montreal...Bret said no.   And that he didn't want to be anything like Jericho, and that Chris screamed louder than anyone in the Dungeon...

Triple H and Hornswoggl were playing with the new Mattel action figures in the back.  Shawn pointed out that Horny wasn't a little kid.  Santino came in dressed like Jericho and Horny attacked him.  The D-X boys got serious and bounced, and Santino wished good luck with the suck it...

D-X vs. JERISHOW for the UNIFIED TAG TEAM TITLES: cribbed largely from Prowrestling.net, because I have one brain and one set of eyes.

Show and Michaels began the match. Hunter tagged in and Show hit a double vertical suplex. DX retreated to the floor.

Back from commercial, Show was working over Hunter. Show scored a couple of nearfalls before Jericho came in and for some reason, mimicked Hulk Hogan's hand cup to the ear. The crowd booed. Hunter, out of desperation, hit a spinebuster. Both men were down and struggled to their corners.

Show tagged in first and cut Hunter off before he could tag out. Show missed a corner middle rope delayed splash. Shawn tagged in. He hit move after move, but did not get Show off of his feet until he hit a dropkick to Show's knee. He went to the top for an elbow, but Jericho knocked him down. Horny came in and hit a butt splash on Show.

Michaels rolled into the ring and scored a two count. He tuned up the band and tried Sweet Chin Music, but Show caught it and hit a chokeslam. He could not cover right away and only got a two count. Jericho tagged in and tried to apply the Walls, but Shawn fought out.

Hunter tagged in and hit a Pedigree on Jericho, but Show broke up the pinfall. DX hit a super Pedigree on Show and he rolled to the floor. Jericho pushed Hunter into Shawn and rolled Hunter up for a two count. He then hit a Codebreaker but remained down. The referee counted. Jericho finally made the cover and Shawn broke up the fall.

Hornswoggle came in and set up for SCM on Jericho, but Jericho kicked him in the head instead. Jericho then applied the Walls to Hunter, but Shawn hit Sweet Chin Music. Hunter covered Jericho for the three count...

After the match, Show entered the ring to approach his prone partner. Hunter grabbed the mic and instructed the crowd to sing the "Goodbye" song. They didn't pick up on the hint. Michaels said if he wasn't down with that... Show gave Jericho a bad look and headed to the back. Jericho came to in the ring. DX was still at ringside and everyone finally started to sing "Goodbye" to him. Jericho struggled to the back...

Really thought JeriShow were gonna get 'em back tonight.   Ah, well, Hart Dynasty may be getting a push then?

Sheamus came out to the ring and cut a promo saying he'd defend his title at the Royal Rumble, but not against John Cena.   Cue music for Evan "Air" Bourne, who asked for HIS shot at the title,  If Bourne wins, he'd get his title shot...

SHEAMUS vs EVAN BOURNE:  ended in under two minutes.  Bourne managed to hit his Shooting Star Press early on, but Sheamus recovered and one bicycle kick and an unnamed finisher later, Sheamus got the three...

Nice tribute to "Dr. Death" Steve Williams by Lawler and Cole.  They showed a graphic into the break...

A video package recapped the Montreal incident, for those of you who were not awareof it by now....

Kofi Kingston made his entrance for his match against Randy Orton...I like the fact that this is a compelling feud without titles on the line.  It is possible.

RANDY ORTON VS. KOFI KINGSTON.  Lots of fast action including Irish Whips, dropkicks, attempted DDTs, a backdrop to the floor of Orton...who's being watched by Legacy ringside.  DON'T SCREW UP, RANDY.

Over break, we missed Kofi being pushed from the top rope to the railing at ringside.  Orton took advantage and worked the back.  A sick guillotine kept Orton in control...

They both cross-bodied each other, and evidently that's like spinach to Kofi.   He hit the Boom Boom legdrop. Orton rolled to the floor but Kofi hit a dive through the ropes. He threw Orton in the ring and scored a very nearfall with a Mike Knox -worthy body.

SOS for two. Kofi then attempted the Trouble in Paradise, but Orton put up his fists like a boxer and blocked it. He immediately followed with the RKO for the win...

Randy started moving up the ramp, but Cody and Ted did not follow...

It's the final segment, the OVERTIME segment.  Vince power walks backstage, ready to tell the fans what's what about Bret Hart.  And to his face.   12 years in the making.

Oh, and Mike Tyson is next week's host.

Vince on the mic in the ring decides he doesn't need to talk to Bret Hart anymore because Shawn and Breat got their closure, so it's over.   So, ya know, Bret comes out.  Sans music.  Dude takes his jacket off.  This is where it gets really really real.

Vince tells Bret that he hopes Bret can be the bigger man and that he's not there to provoke him, and all he ever wanted from Bret was an apology for the spitting and the punching backstage and the Hall of Fame thing.  Bret has two words for Vince.

And I'm gonna throw this back to cribbing from Rich Twilling at prowrestling.net, who do this much more eloquently than I:

Bret continued and said Vince wanted closure just as much as Bret does. Bret said he came tonight to get closure and he was halfway there. Vince said he honestly wanted to "kick Bret in the guts." Vince said he knew that was stupid and he did want the same thing as Bret.

Vince said he remembered Bret's first WrestleMania, which was WrestleMania 2. He mentioned Bret being in the battle royal at that event with Andre the Giant. He said he knew Andre's career would soon come to an end, but he knew Bret was the future.

He said Bret once said Vince was like a father to him. He then nominated Bret's dad, Stu Hart, for this year's WWE Hall of Fame class. He thanked Bret for everything he had ever done for WWE and the fans. He thanked him for being the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

They shook hands. Bret's music hit and both men raised their arms together in unison. At this point, it was just a matter of who would kick whom first. It turned out to be Vince. Vince kicked Bret right in the guts, just like he envisioned earlier, and left the ring. Vince, from the stage, and Bret, from the ring, stared each other down...

And there you have it.   Not bad.
