Two-time NFL Pro Bowl selection Herschel Walker will make his professional debut against fellow newcomer Greg Nagy at Strikeforce “Miami” on Jan. 30 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.
The Florida Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation notified
Sherdog.com on Friday that the bout had been approved by its offices.
The matchup is still pending final approval by Showtime, which will
broadcast the event live beginning at 10 p.m. EST/PST.
UltMMA.com was the first to report of the potential matchup on Thursday.
The 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and a 12-season NFL veteran,
Walker signed a multi-fight contract with Strikeforce in September. The
47-year-old heavyweight began his training camp at the American
Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif., in late October under renowned
coach and Strikeforce consultant Bob Cook. Walker, a fifth-degree black belt in tae kwon do, trains with UFC standouts Cain Velasquez, Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick and Jon Fitch, among others.
“I’ve been training for several years,” Walker said in a September
release. “I would play college football games on Saturday and then
compete in martial arts tournaments on Sunday after church. I’m now
looking forward to opening up another chapter in my life and to
competing in MMA.”
Nagy is a two-time Rage In The Cage veteran. Nagy lost a unanimous decision to Francisco Navarro at RITC 136 on Nov. 7 in Prescott, Ariz. He won his professional debut with a first-round technical knockout against Robert Principato at RITC 132 last August.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker described Nagy as “tall and aggressive.”
