WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross updated the blog section of JRsBarBQ.com The following items are among the highlights.
-Ross on the arrests of Chris Jericho and Hurricane Helms: "Yes, some of my friends made some unwanted and unnecessary headlines this week but as I mentioned here earlier this week it wasn't as serious a legal matter as it was made out to be. It wasn't the smartest thing that I've read about recently but that's what often occurs when drinking booze goes from moderation to excess. Key thing is to learn from one's mistakes as many of us have been guilty of using bad judgment. Thank goodness no one was DUI."
Powell's POV: Definitely a fair point regarding the DUI. They weren't exactly responsible with their actions, but it definitely could have been worse had they not been wise enough to take a cab. It does sound like the story was blown out of proportion, but such is life in the instant news era.
-Ross on people in the business who don't watch all the television shows: "How can anyone be in the wrestling business and NOT watch all the product that they can of the genre? How? In a world of DVR's, etc there is no excuse. If one earns their living in wrestling then watch all the televised product is no brainier in my view."
Powell's POV: I'm guessing this is directed at Vince Russo, who said he didn't know much about Shelton Benjamin because he doesn't watch WWE programming. I'm with J.R. on this one. I think it would benefit Russo tremendously to keep an eye on what WWE is doing. Hell, maybe he could steal modern ideas rather than looking to the Montreal screwjob for more inspiration. Okay, so I have no idea whether that was something Russo booked or if it was a Hogan camp production. Either way, Russo and even Vince McMahon would be wise to keep an eye on the competition.
-Ross on Bobby Lashley's first Strikeforce fight: "Bobby Lashley fights Wes Sims on the Strikeforce event and I think if Lashley is impressive that he takes a sabbatical from pro wrestling to capitalize on the small window available to him to earn potential mega bucks in MMA. That's with no 'insider knowledge' but it might make the most sense for the talented and athletic Lashley. Why no one markets Lashley's military service has always baffled me. As much as I respect Lashley's athletic skills, I hope that he is not rushed into a bout with the feared Fedor any time soon as in 2010. That fight has the potential to be a big money maker on PPV if both fighters are properly promoted and branded. Lashley needs more, impressive wins."
Powell's POV: I share in J.R.'s concern that Lashley will be rushed into a fight with Fedor simply because Strikeforce lacks heavyweights with name value. Dana White has made a lot of money for UFC by striking while the iron is hot with his top matches, but I think the point that J.R. is making is that there is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to making Lashley a star in the MMA world to the point that people will pay to see him fight.
Other topics include more on the Strikeforce event, the reason J.R. won't be part of the next WWE video game, John Cena playing golf with some mega stars from the sports world.
