BRMC’s new single Beat The Devil
Tattoo from their upcoming album of the same name is more great stuff, from
a great band.
Whilst it doesn’t quite have Berlin’s
punchines, or 666 Conducer’s dark
drive (two of my favorite tracks from Baby
81), BRMC has made something that definitely keeps their signature garage
southern rock sound going on.
The song starts with a plodding drum riff that gladly
stomps all over John-Lennonesque bluesy vocals, building in intensity with its
hummable ‘aaah aaah aaaah’ chorus and laid back guitar licks and concluding on
an all out march of American Goth Blues.
But the song almost did not make it unto the album, as our friends at spinner
report.
BRMC bassist Robert Levon recalls, "We called our engineer in the middle of the night and worked all
night 'til the sun came up. The next day we delivered the record to our label
and it went straight to the mastering lab. It was a mad dash, hearts pounding
down to the last second."
Levon went on to
say that he got the name of the song and album from Edgar Allan Poe’s short
story “The Devil In Belfry”. The phrase “beat the devil’s tattoo” just jumped
at him. Tell what you think of this ditty.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is set to release their fifth studio
album, Beat The Devil’s Tattoo, on March 8th (UK/Europe/Japan/Australia
et al), March 9th (US/Canada) and March 16th (Germany).
