ASSASSIN'S CREED III... Online?

Ubisoft recently revealed its line-up for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, which includes a title that is a bit of a head-scratcher. According to Ubisoft's press release, there are plans to develop yet another installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise, one that will have an online multi-player component. Kotaku clarified that the new Assassin's Creed will be a stand-alone single-player game with an online mode, but one can't help imagining thousands upon thousands of assassins kicking the crap out of each other in order to get to the same target. Or even killing each other as targets...great, I've just drooled on myself.
While the prospect of an online Assassin's Creed makes me giddier than any ultra-violent video game ever should, I have to wonder how Ubisoft will tackle the project while keeping to the standard of quality associated with the series. With the next game featuring ACII hero Ezio de Auditore (and perhaps, consequently, taking place in renaissance Italy once again), will Ubisoft be able to create a new enough story using the same hero and setting? And just how will the online multi-player mode affect the fluidity and overall quality of the story? I enjoy mindlessly murdering Venetian civilians as much as the next player, but there eventually needs to be some linearity in order to keep the game going. A game with only assassination contracts and beat-up events probably would probably flop.
So, Ubisoft, you've got quite a lot on your plate here. Topping a hit like ACII won't be a walk in the park, especially with the online aspect of the game to contend with. But I've got faith in you. Just give me hidden shoe-blades and a kicking ability, and I'll bite for sure.
