GEEKWEEK Exclusive: Kerry King of Slayer Talks Painting the World with Blood (fast) & Being "Not Of YOUR God"

Slayer2009wpb_580

There's no other band like Slayer, and there's no other guitar god like Kerry King.

King's got a wicked sense of rhythm and an even more wicked sense of humor. He's penned some of the most evil shit ever committed to tape, and Slayer's latest masterpiece, World Painted Blood, stands alongside the band's classic records proudly. It rips, roars and ravages with an aggression that no other band can match.

Kerry's not the biggest fan of Christianity, but the man does know a killer riff. He sat down with Geek Week writer and Dolor (www.bookofdolor.com) author Rick Florino to talk about the "cool guy" club, writing World Painted Blood and sticking it to your enemies in this exclusive interview.

What's the story behind "Not of this God?" It's the perfect album closer.

Are you in Southern California?

Yes.

Have you seen the people with "Not of this World" stickers on their cars everywhere?

I have…

That song was my attack against organized religion because they think they're part of the "cool guy" club. Everybody has "Not of this World," "Jesus Freak" and all of that other shit on their cars. Now, if you put anything on your window that said, "Atheist," let alone "Satanist," that cool brotherhood would get your car because you don't believe what they believe. I think it's the only faction in the world where the members are so insecure that they're not happy until everybody else believes what they believe.

That mentality kills that individuality completely.

It's retarded…

That's quite a statement to end World Painted Blood with.

Yeah, I was pretty insistent on that being the last song [Laughs]. Jeff and I went back and forth. He had things that he really wanted, and I had things I really wanted. We each compromised and got some things we wanted.

Were "Public Display of Dismemberment" and "Americon" written at the same time? They both have a similar vibe.

Dude, all of my music came together in like six weeks, which is ridiculous. I think what gives this album its identity and individuality is we wrote in such a condensed manner. More so than ever, we really went out of our way to make up riffs that didn't sound like other riffs. Writing over such a short time, it's very easy for songs and lyrical phrases to sound similar, so we really went out of our way to make things sound different. Some things like the "Americon" riff, until I showed it to Dave, I didn't even know if I liked it [Laughs]. One day he heard me playing it and went right in and jumped on drums. I said, "Okay, this is going to work" [Laughs].
